INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW BEFORE AND AFTER VASECTOMY
You and your partner should read these instructions carefully. The two of you should discuss any concerns about the vasectomy and talk about them with your doctor. Remember, a vasectomy should be thought of as permanent.
Before vasectomy:
- Don't take blood thinners such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen) or aspirin-containing products for two weeks before and one week after your vasectomy.
- Shower the evening before and again the day of your vasectomy.
- Bring an athletic supporter (jock strap) with you to wear after the vasectomy.
- Shave front of scrotum.
- Bring someone with you who can drive you home.
After vasectomy:
- Keep the incision clean and dry. It should stop oozing in one or two days.
- Keep an ice pack on your scrotum (outside the athletic supporter) for eight hours and stay off your feet as much as you can for the first two days.
- Wear an athletic supporter for 24 hours or as long as it feels comfortable.
- Limit your activities during the first two days because this will help reduce the swelling, discomfort and bleeding.
- Call your doctor if you notice ongoing bleeding or a swelling bigger than marble size around the incision.
- Call your doctor if your pain is not relieved by pain medication.
- Do not go swimming until the incision is healed. Don't take hot baths for 48 hours. You may take showers any time.
- Do not ejaculate for one week after the vasectomy. You may start having sex again after the first week, but use birth control.
- Remember to use reliable birth control until your doctor tells you that you are sterile.
- Talk to your doctor about going back to work if you have a job that requires manual labor. Most men return to work two days after a vasectomy.
- Avoid strenuous activities for seven days.
- Bring a semen sample to your doctor's office when your doctor tells you to, so it can be checked for sperm. Collect the semen in a clean plastic container and bring it to your doctor's office within one hour. The sample will be looked at under a microscope, and you will be told about the results.
